Project changes

I have following news for you:

  • Christopher R. Parr (now known as fosstux, former crparr) is the new project maintainer as jpetso has resigned as main project manager.
  • I'm just now transferring the project site from Berlios to Sourceforge, as you can see in the sidebar. Now all the files are contained in the svn repository (well.. upload is in progress).

Results of IRC Meeting

  • The “Tango port” (a combined set of GNOME and KDE icons, adhering to the freedesktop.org Icon Naming Specification) will be named lila-complete, it'll be one tar.gz with all the icons, and will be using symlinks to remove duplicate icons.
  • The forum should be used for project management tasks, no issue tracker will be introduced.
  • All tar.gz themes that are not yet there will be transferred to Berlios SVN.

Meeting in IRC

I'd like to meet you all (developers, maintainers and users) in IRC in order to talk about Lila and the future plans.

  • When: Sunday, June, 17th 2007, 20:00
  • Where: irc.freenode.net, channel #lila.

Hope to see you there!!!

Revamping lila-gnome: the amazing 0.6.4 release

Since virtually all of our contributors to the GNOME theme have left the project or otherwise stopped contributing, the last release of lila-gnome has been an incredibly long time away from now. Of course, with 2 years of no updates, there are more and more icons missing or require to be named differently, and the theme grows incomplete.

Thanks to the hard work of A_Bein (a.k.a. Alfredas Beinartas), these dark times are over! lila-gnome has seen masses of additions and renames, so the new 0.6.4 release looks much better on current GNOME releases than the previous versions ever did. There are far too many changes to mention them here, so check it out by yourself and get it directly from the downloads page.

ChL also updated the Gentoo ebuilds and overlay, so the people using the overlay with Gentoo's layman may already have the new version installed =)

Lila overlay on the layman list

The Lila overlay is now in the global overlay list of layman! There are also new installation intructions that cover the use of layman.

lila-kde 0.8.3 is out!

In lack of an appropriate testing environment, I decided to postpone renaming the icons to conform to the Tango icon naming specification until KDE has switched to it. Doing that so-called “Tango port” will bring real desktop independence to the Lila icon sets, but it will have to wait until there's someone motivated enough to do it properly. So here's another small update to our quite comprehensive KDE version of the Lila icon set…

This release concentrates on making the icons used by KMail/Kontact and Amarok more complete. You might also like the new application icons for Wine, KGpg and Wireless Assistant. It's not that much of an update for half a year of drawing opportunities, but rest assured that Lila won't die so fast! Anyways, a few more people drawing icons would be great, so if you have a Lila icon or two for your favorite application, your work will be appreciated :)

In addition to the icon additions, lila-kde now has a package just containing the SVG source files, for those who want to tinker with the icons and don't like SVN. (It's also practical for people with little bandwidth, as the PNG icons can be generated with a simple script that's also inside the package.)

Don't forget to grab one of the release tarballs from the downloads page, or alternatively one of the fine Gentoo ebuilds contributed by our great ChL. Oh right, and if someone can point out how to make a real package out of this .deb description, my thankfulness will haunt you forevermore and I'll be able to provide Debian/Ubuntu packages in the future.

Web site migration... again

On the whole, our web site at http://lila-theme.berlios.de, created by former Lila web dude rezza, has served us well. It's got beautiful looks and manages to present important information in a straightforward, easy-to-grasp way. The current forums have been set up in a similarly awesome way and managed to keep the Lila community socialized. rezza, also known as Doug Whiteley, deserves a big thankyou for investing his time and effort into the Lila Center. (and everyone: “thankyou, rezza!”)

However, there were a few things that don't work out so well with our current infrastructure:

  • It's more difficult to edit the web site than it could be: you need ssh access to the web server, and must edit the html code manually
  • The forums are being spammed to death by stupid spam bots
  • plus, we can't upgrade or fix it, because the forums are based on a trial version of the proprietary Invision Power Board.

So recently our community member Christopher Parr (crparr in the forums) stepped up to provide the Lila project with a new web presence. What does that mean for us?

  • The new Lila Center is now running on DokuWiki, and all data from the original Lila Center has been migrated.
  • The original forums are closed (but still available as a read-only archive), and we're introducing the new Lila forums at http://forums.lila-center.info, powered by FUDforum which also features spam bot prevention capabilities :D
  • Both are currently running on crparr's web hosting facilities, and he's also paying the fees for the lila-center.info domain.
  • Subversion repository and release tarball downloads are still hosted by BerliOS, which is going to stay that way for the indefinite future. (Also, note the link to our BerliOS project page in the left-hand site navigation.)

Feel free to register in the forums or also on this wiki, in order to socialize and improve things. I hope you like the new style of the Lila Center - if you find that something needs further improvements, we are eager to hear your input. Now it's up to you (and me) to get the community rolling again… let's have a great start with our new web infrastructure!

Good news for ebuild users

If you love 'emerge' and you have been losing sleep because of the discontinuation of our ebuilds for Gentoo, your unlucky days are over now: Thanks to Christian Lemke (ChL in the forums), the Lila ebuilds have been brought back to life!

Not only has he worked hard to test all of them and fix the broken ones, but he also claimed maintainership over the ebuilds, the overlay and the liladdiction script. He made new ebuilds for the current KDE icons and Audicious, the successor of the XMMS-forked Beep media player, and even created some new color mods for packages that have been purple-only by now.

As you would expect, all of that great stuff is available on the downloads page. Grab it while it's hot!

Call for action

Before announcing the new lila-kde release, I need to get this out: All of the other Lila developers have disappeared over time, so currently there is only me (jpetso) left working on the icons. As I'm just doing the KDE version of the icon set (and have neither time nor motivation to take care of the other ports) the GNOME icons and all the other neat packages have essentially been unmaintained for a year or longer.

If you want to ensure the continued greatness of the Lila artwork, now is the time to join the project and claim maintainership for one or two of the packages. In most cases that doesn't even mean that you need proficient drawing skills, it's just important to have the packages tested on current platforms, copy some of the existing icons in order to stay current, and put out a release every now and then.

Also, updating the Gentoo ebuilds, install script and overlay has been discontinued due to lack of manpower. If you want to resurrect the overlay and know how to do it, I'll gladly accept your help.

Every form of assistance is appreciated. If you're interested in keeping Lila alive, please contact me through the forums where we can work out a way to get things running again.

New lila-kde release: 0.8.2

Despite the above, I have managed to get out a new lila-kde release. It catches up on KDE 3.5 by filling the most urgent icon gaps. In addition to many detail improvements there are also a few new icons, most notably Konversation, Kile and (tada!) amaroK.

This will probably be the last release for the KDE 3 series, future work should go into porting the KDE icons (and maybe a few GNOME ones) to the Tango icon naming specification which will be the foundation for both future GNOME and KDE versions.

From this release on, the lila-kde and lila-kde-splash releases are available only from the BerliOS download page, our own downloads page only links to that one. You can still get all other Lila packages from the downloads page and praise or complain about all of that in the forums.

A new splash screen for KDE

Quite a few people were obviously searching for a Lila themed KDE splash screen. Really, I had no choice but create one that replaces the previous official splash by telex-. Hopefully it satisfies many people that would otherwise long for a splash screen in original Lila design and colors.

Perhaps you already guessed it, but the splash screen can again be found at the downloads page (for the ones who don't know yet). It's also available on kde-look together with a preview. Enjoy, or don't!

New kid on the block: a Lila IceWM theme

It might get pretty hard in the future to find a window manager without a suitable Lila theme available. The Lila project has now taken control over IceWM with a new theme by hollywoodb, further reducing the amount of Lila-less window managers.

The theme can be found at the downloads page (as always), and for the sceptical ones amongst you there's also a screenshot available in the screenshots section (at the bottom of the page). If you like the theme, you might want to report back to hollywoodb and express your thoughts with a forum post in the forums.

Updated KDE icon set (again)

A good number of new or improved icons in Lila-KDE are an excellent reason for pushing out a new release nicely named lila-kde 0.8.1. As you'd expect it, there are updated ChangeLog and TODO files. Cool new stuff includes a more complete Konqueror, new icons for USB drives, Superkaramba (since v0.37), Gwenview, and many more. All the icons are now also available in a new white color mod (well, in fact the mod is quite old, but it has never been used for the KDE version and has its comeback now).

Users of Ubuntu, Debian, SuSE and other non-Gentoo distributions will be pleased by the fact that most Gentoo specific icons have been replaced by generic ones - for those who loved them, there is the plan to stuff them into small expansion sets for different distros.

There is a new overlay again (containing also the color mods this time) which is available through the downloads page, as well as the new tarballs and ebuilds. You can now get the color mods from there too instead of just browsing the directory structure.

Don't forget to visit the forums in case you have something to say about it!

New KDE release

Once again, the KDE icon set has had some more polish - a few important KDE applications got their own unique icon, also a lot of other icons were added or improved. The new release is called lila-kde 0.8 and should get along quite well with KDE 3.4.

You can check out the ChangeLog or get the tarball and ebuild right away from the downloads page. Thanks to 9-speed, the overlay snapshot there has been updated too.

A script by andrewski (using svg-utils, naturally) made automated generation of color mods possible. Although the color modded ebuilds are not contained in the overlay snapshot, you can still get lila-kde-blue, lila-kde-red and lila-kde-white by downloading them directly. If you want new color mods, you just have to provide me with an appropriate XML file for svg-utils (for example, by posting it in the forums).

Now go and enjoy this fine release!
